Reinaut Formation: Kampourischium
The Reinaut Formation in the south of the continent called Guralta is one of, if not the most extensive fossil site from the late Bobossic. Dated to have been formed between 125 and 122 million Eryobian years ago, the Reinaut Formation offers a glimpse of what life was like in the Kikilian, the latest stage of the Bobossic right before the devastating mass extinction dubbed “The World Scarring” happened.
Back when it was formed, the Reinaut Formation was likely a subtropical or temperate open woodland subject to seasonal rains. The fossils discovered in the Reinaut Formation so far, have mostly been megafaunal animals which tended to fossilise better than smaller animals in the conditions that were present in Reinaut 122 million years ago.
One of Reinauts most recognisable animals was Kampourischium velox. A large and lightly built predator with long legs, it was likely a very fast hunter back when it was alive. Name-giver of the family Kampourischiidae, it’s most defining feature is the large hump on its hip. This hump would’ve been an attachment site for large leg muscles and likely acted as a counterbalance to aid in bipedal locomotion. Kampourischiids were the first animals to ever become bipedal on Eryobis and quickly capitalised on that fact. They were very diverse as a group and contained both carnivorous and herbivorous niches. Kampourischium itself represents the pinnacle of their evolution. A swift and possibly endothermic or mesothermic pursuit hunter capable of reaching great speeds and equipped with a jaw able to crush bone. It is the most commonly found carnivore in Reinaut an possible remains of Kampourischium have also been found in the Noileyn Beds in the continent called Hatèmica, showing how widespread it may have been, though these continents would’ve been closer to each other back 122 million years ago.
